2 winter war games. Winter, military, third

The III World War Games ended in Sochi. From 22 to 28 February, military athletes competed in seven winter sports - biathlon, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, ski orienteering, ski mountaineering, indoor climbing and short track. Competitions were held both in the city itself and in the mountain cluster - ski and biathlon centers "Rosa Khutor" and "Laura".

The first World War Games, organized by the International Military Sports Council, took place in September 1995 in Rome and included competitions in summer sports only. Then 93 countries participated in them, the Russian team won. Summer competitions between military athletes take place every four years. At various times, they were received by Croatia, Brazil, India and South Korea. In 2019, China will host the Summer War Games.

The Winter War Games were first held in March 2010 in the Italian city of Valle d'Aosta and are now also held every four years. In 2013, the competitions were held in Annecy, France, and this year in Sochi. Guilherme Keys, project manager of the International Council of Military Sports, at a press conference dedicated to the end of the Games, noted that Sochi "has one hundred percent fulfilled the high demands placed on it."

In the medal standings of the 2017 War Games, the Russian team became the undisputed leader. The national team has 42 awards: 22 gold, 9 silver and 11 bronze. The second place was taken by Italy, the third place was taken by the French team.

The most fruitful sports for medals for Russians were biathlon and ski orienteering. The famous skier Major Eduard Khrennikov became the six-time World War Games champion, having won two gold medals at the Sochi Games. Both Russian teams - women and men - have become the undisputed favorites of the patrol race. The climber Sergey Luzhetsky and the biathlete brought the gold medal to the national team.

Facilities built for the 2014 Winter Olympics were used for the competition. Relays in ski mountaineering and slalom were held at the Rosa Khutor ski and biathlon complex. In "Laura" athletes fought for victory in cross-country skiing, ski orienteering and biathlon competitions. Facilities located in Sochi itself were also involved: the rock-climbing relay took place at the Bolshoi Sports Palace, and the Iceberg Ice Palace hosted the short track competition.

Each site was equipped with a press center, equipped with everything necessary for the work of journalists. Special buses, marked with the symbols of the World War Games, ply between the city and mountain clusters.

The weather in sunny Sochi and Krasnaya Polyana, although not very much, differed, which caused certain problems. So, a Russian slalom player, that her eighth place in the competition among women is due, among other things, to the fact that it was too warm, which is why pits appeared on the track. At the same time, Ekaterina admitted that the reason for her unexpected failure for the fans was a technical mistake made during the relay.

BIATHLON

The name of the sport discipline comes from two Latin words "twice" and "wrestling", therefore, originally biathlon was called modern winter biathlon. Includes cross-country skiing and rifle shooting at multiple firing lines.

The first race, vaguely reminiscent of biathlon, was organized by border guards on the Swedish-Norwegian border back in 1767. In the 19th century in Norway, biathlon took shape as a sport for soldiers. The progenitor of modern biathlon, the military patrol competition, was introduced at the Olympic Games in 1924, 1928, 1936 and 1948.

Within the framework of the III Winter World Military Games, competitions will be held in the following types: sprint (7.5 km - for women, 10 km - for men), mixed relay (6 km - for women and 7.5 km - for men) and a patrol race (15 km - for women, 20 km - for men).

Patrol race - a modern type of competition for military patrols (the race that is the ancestor of biathlon). This is a race with a distance of 20 km for men and 15 km for women, with three firing lines. Each participating country can enter two patrols (male and female).

The team consists of four athletes - biathletes and skiers. One of the team members is the leader of the patrol, three are members of the patrol, each of whom fires from a prone position and fires one shot at the center of their installation. In case of misses - penalty loops based on the number of misses by the team according to IBU rules.

Sprint - a type of biathlon race for 10 km for men and 7.5 km for women with two firing lines. Biathletes start at intervals of 30 seconds. After the first circle, shooting is performed from a prone position, after the second - standing. Biathletes choose their own firing positions on the shooting range for shooting. For each miss, a penalty loop of 150 m is provided.

Mixed relay - team competition in biathlon. The team consists of four athletes (two women and two men). Each biathlete goes through one stage, 6 km for women and 7.5 km for men, with two firing lines.

One representative from each country will start at the same time and, having run their stage, pass the baton to the next biathlete from their team. First, women cover their distances, then men. At each stage, there are two shooting: the first is prone, the second is standing. The athlete has three spare rounds for each shooting. If the biathlete uses up spare cartridges, then for each subsequent miss, a penalty loop of 150 m is provided.
