How to learn how to properly jump into the water from a great height

Jump from high heights only if you have already perfectly mastered jumping from low heights.

Even jumping down with your feet, remember the safety precautions. Striking the water when jumping from 5 meters and striking the water from 10 meters are completely different things. A blow to the water when jumping from 15 meters can be fatal.

Breathing training


Holding your breath is not easy!

First of all, you need to train your breathing - to learn how to hold it under water.

The lungs begin to develop on land. Moreover, you can start even in a domestic environment - exercise while you are in the shower, watching a movie or washing dishes.

Before holding, enrich your blood with oxygen - take a deep breath. The inhales and exhales themselves should be deeper, longer and more rhythmic than usual.

First, do 4-6 repetitions at a moderate pace (inhale for three counts, exhale for three more), then as many as smooth as possible.

  • Sit down, inhale.

Dive

After breathing training, you need to learn how to dive. This can be done from a support (side, curbstone, tower, springboard) or directly in the water.

For scuba diving, it is even better to start diving while in the water - this way you will quickly get used to new sensations and understand how to dive correctly. After that, you can complicate the task by jumping into the water.

To dive, lower your arms and head down, legs tucked in, as before a breaststroke stroke. From the outside it looks like not a complete somersault. When the pelvis is higher than the head, straighten your legs.

Option for the pool: jump up, plunge, bend your legs and push them off the pool wall. Then extend your arms forward and row down with effort.

If you dive from a jump, then consider the following rules:

  • the angle of entry into the water is from 45 to 90 degrees.
  • The head is between the hands, the chin is pressed to the chest.
  • The arms are extended forward, palms down, with the fingertips pointing to the target surface point.
  • Push with your feet hard so as not to hit your stomach on the water.

Technique and how to learn

If you want to move quickly and correctly after a dive, the only option is to move in the correct technique (even if you are using fins).

Underwater swimming is based on various modifications of breaststroke and chest crawl, although butterfly swimming can also be used.

Combined ways are also common, in which the legs work in one of these styles, and the arms in another, we will consider them below.

It makes sense for you to try each of these options and choose the option (or options) that suits you best.

Underwater breaststroke

The difference from the classical technique is that the strokes are made long to the hips, followed by sliding. Legs work like in a classic breaststroke.

There is another option, in which only the legs work with breaststroke - and the arms are extended with an arrow, as in the “Torpedo” version described below:

Chest swivel

Differences from the classic surface crawl:

  • legs are more diverted upward;
  • the extension of hands upward is not done.
  • This option is very clearly shown in the video below (see starting from the second minute):

Underwater torpedo

The name of this variant speaks for itself: a person swims like a "torpedo" with his arms outstretched - that is, his arms do not work. Legs work crawl.

A modified version - the arms are stretched forward, the body and legs work as in a butterfly (see below for more on this).

Arms - breaststroke, legs - crawl

This is the first of the aforementioned combined options. In it, sliding is performed at the moment of moving forward, as shown in the illustration below:

An additional modification of this option: the arms make elongated movements up to the hips, and the legs make movements after the stroke is over. Sliding in this version is performed when the arms are located along the body.

Hands - butterfly, legs breaststroke

In this version, the hands do not work as in the classic butterfly, but are held at the torso, after which there is a slide and only then the next stroke.

Dolphin swimming underwater technique

Another possible way is to swim underwater in the butterfly style (“dolphin”).

As you can see, the arms need to be extended forward with the arrow, and the body should make wave-like movements that start from the very top, pass through the lower back and abs (their muscles should be especially involved) and end with leg swings.

The legs are connected, their movements are a continuation of the work of the torso.

You can also additionally connect breaststroke-style arms to the dolphin's legs - then, as already mentioned above, they make an elongated stroke to the hips and remain at the body at the time of sliding.

  1. Swimming "dolphin" looks very graceful. However, it spends more of the swimmer's energy and, accordingly, depletes the oxygen supply faster.

    Besides, it takes longer to study. To begin with, you should master the methods of breaststroke and crawl. Once you have mastered the basic scuba diving skills, you will choose the stroke combination that suits you best.

  2. If you are diving with fins, it is better to crawl with your feet. And if in a monofin, then a "dolphin".
  3. To maneuver underwater, you change the position of your upper body. To turn, bend the body in the right direction and make a powerful stroke with the opposite hand (with the left - to correct the course to the right, with the right - to the left).

    If you want to dive deeper, lower your head and outstretched arms down. To return to the surface, bend upward from the waist to the fingers.

  4. Ascending is best with breaststroke technique. If possible, push off the bottom.

Open water

When you have mastered all of the above, then you can go to open reservoirs. But there, remember about safety:

  • Never jump into water without seeing the bottom.
  • Make sure in advance that the depth is sufficient for a safe dive.
  • Do not dive more than 3-5 meters, even if you are already experienced.

    Only trained athletes can dive deeper than 3-5 meters. To do this, you need to be able to equalize pressure, hold your breath longer, spend more time lifting.

  • Calculate your strength. Always reserve oxygen for ascent.
  • Save energy. All movements are smooth and calm.
  • Do not dive as you exhale. Only on inhalation.
  • Don't dive alone. There should be someone who can hedge you, pull you out himself or call for help.
  • If you seriously decided to go in for freediving, descend to a depth of more than 5 meters, become an extreme, even at an amateur level, then a lesson with a trainer is a must. Why am I telling this? And to the fact that learning to hold your breath under water and diving is much easier than swimming: you do not need to apply a lot of physical strength for this. So, even if you can swim no more than 3 meters on your own, and even then "like a dog," try to learn how to dive under water.

Learning to hold your breath

First, when on land, take a deep breath and try not to breathe for as long as possible. When you feel that you have very little air left, begin to slowly exhale it through your mouth. If you do everything correctly, you will make a hissing sound during this time.

After practicing on land, try doing the same in water. Don't dive just yet, just dip your face in the water.

Remember: exhalation should be gradual. This will prolong your time underwater and will not "choke" your breath. And try to hold the air not behind your cheeks (as inexperienced beginners often do), but in your lungs. Otherwise, you will not be able to hold out under water for more than a few seconds.

Gradually complicate the exercises: in one dive, try to get several objects from the bottom. And then you can learn to dive into the water from a low side.

But remember that the depth in the pool or pond should be no less than your height, and the bottom should be spotlessly clean.

When jumping from the side, do not be afraid to dive upside down, while stretching your arms forward. At such a moment, many coward and "fly" forward with their whole body, hitting the surface of the water. It really hurts.   • It will be far from easy to master the technique of entering the water without much splashing, but the secret lies in trying to dive in a position more perpendicular to the surface of the water.
  • If you are diving with bent knees, then do not try to do jump flips.
  • Sometimes it is much easier to fall into the water. Remember that the most important thing is to get a good diving experience, so don't be too discouraged if you don't succeed in the early stages.
  • Do not be afraid. If you are diving in a proven place, then just push off well from the springboard, bend your back in an arch, straighten your legs and enjoy the process.

Starting position: arms outstretched forward, lying on the water. Inhale, lower your face into the water, immediately making a slight inhalation with your nose and mouth. As soon as you lay down with your chest and face on the water, pull your other leg to the side and push off from it with both legs.

Your whole body at the moment of sliding in the water should be located as horizontally as possible: your head is between your hands, and your face looks straight down, in no case forward!

If there is no side behind your back, then you need to push off with your feet from the bottom, while the whole sequence of movements is the same as in the pool.

Mini jump in water

Once you've mastered Strelochka, proceed to the mini-dive.

Starting position: standing up to your waist in water, keep your arms outstretched above the water. Next, inhale through your mouth, jump upward and, as soon as the body goes under the water, quickly pull your legs to the side and push off from it.

1. The first thing to learn is don't close your eyeswhen we are underwater.

Here's a simple exercise for this: try to go under water, then roll your hand in front of your eyes and try to see your fingers. Ahead of the question about the eyes, I immediately want to dispel fears: do not be afraid that the water will pinch your eyes, because even salty sea water, as a rule, will not cause discomfort and irritation.

2. When you are confident that under water you can easily not close your eyes and look at everything calmly, then you can try to dive to the bottom of a shallow pool or, for example, a lake, try to lift something from the bottom, for example a toy, a coin, a piece of chalk.

3. Further, you can use this option: bend forward as much as possible, and stretch your legs up, diving head first, try to get the object from the bottom. At first glance, this method may seem difficult and difficult, but a few attempts and everything will certainly work out.

4. The next step is to swim a few meters away from our desired object and try to dive after it already from the surface of the water. At first, it can be difficult to submerge the torso, but as soon as you raise your legs underwater, your torso will be pulled down by its own weight.

5. Now you need to determine how long you can stay under water. This may seem surprising, but swimming underwater is practically no different from swimming on the surface of the water... Although, no, it is different, swimming underwater is perhaps even more interesting.

You may face several challenges!

- One of them is buoyancy. But the secret is simple: for that, the water did not push you up, just keep your feet above your head, and let each stroke be directed first forward, then down.

- The second difficulty you will encounter is keeping a straight course while diving. Of course, it is clear that there are absolutely no convenient landmarks under the water, but, for example, on a river you can try to navigate by trees.

Well, we got to the main point. When you feel like a confident swimmer, the time has come to learn to gracefully and beautifully enter the water, that is, to dive head first correctly and safely. In practice, most beginners are just afraid to dive forward with their heads and just flop into the water, of course, they hit the water noticeably.

7. Go out to the side of the pool or river bank, where the depth is quite shallow and lean forward, your hands above your head, they should practically touch the water surface, and gently slide into the water like a fish. Practice well in this exercise.

8. Then try to jump into the water with a small running start. Rate how far the jump is. First from a low height, then from a higher one. Adjust the height as you exercise and your ability.

9. Imagine that you have already learned how to dive decently from 3 meters, a height of 6 or even 10 meters will no longer frighten and alarm. On the contrary, you will start to get incredible pleasure from this short flight.
