XI Winter Olympic Games were held in Sapporo (Japan) from 3 to 13 February 1972.

The second half of the 60s of the XX century was characterized by a difficult political situation in the world. The underdeveloped countries of Africa, where military coups and uprisings became almost an everyday norm, were especially "distinguished". This, of course, left its mark on the development of the entire world sports and the Olympic movement.

But, despite all the complexity of the situation on Earth, the Olympic movement could not fail to receive a new impetus in its development. And soon this impulse appeared. An example of this was the officially submitted application on October 6, 1965 from the management The Olympic Committee Japan and the city of Sapporo. In it, an appeal was drawn up to the President of the IOC with a request to consider the candidacy of Sapporo as a candidate city to host the XI Winter Olympic Games of 1972. And already in April 1966, the 64th session of the IOC took place in Rome, at which the issue was resolved that this Japanese city was destined to become the capital of the next, 11th White Olympics. The decision of this session was doubly significant - for the first time the Winter Olympic Games were to be held in Asia, which had never happened before.

Games Emblem

Eight of the best designers in Japan entered the competition for their types of emblems for the Olympics, but Kazumasa Nagai and his project won, which was eventually chosen as the official emblem for the Sapporo Olympic Games.

The emblem shows a combination of three completely independent elements:
- the rising sun, the symbol of Japan;
- a snowflake, which is a symbol of winter;
- Olympic rings with the inscription "Sapporo '72".

Official Games Poster

The plot of the Olympic poster is a snowy mountain peak in combination with the emblem of the Games, based on a stylized snowflake, a similar image of which goes back to ancient times. The composition was written by Takashi Kono.

At the rehearsal of the opening ceremony of the XI Winter Olympic Games in Sapporo, one of the spectators drew the attention of the members of the organizing committee to the fact that the Olympic rings are incorrectly positioned on the flag introduced into the stadium. As you know, the order of the rings is legalized by the Olympic Charter: blue, yellow, black, green, red. And then it turned out that the flag with the "error" was hung on all winter Games since 1952. And nobody noticed anything.

For the first time, the Games were held in Asia. Acting as the organizers of the Games, the Japanese did not count on the success of their athletes: after all, in their entire history they managed to win only one silver medal. The main task of the Games was to demonstrate the social and economic transformations that have taken place in the country in the post-war decades. Therefore, about 4 thousand journalists were accredited in Sapporo.

From 3 to 13 February 1972 - the XI Winter Olympic Games were held in Sapporo (Japan). 1006 athletes (including 206 women) from 35 countries took part in 7 sports.

The USSR team, which consisted of 82 athletes, performed in all types of the program, except for bobsleigh competitions, and won 8 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals. Successful performances of skiers, biathletes, hockey players and figure skaters allowed the USSR team to get ahead of all rivals. The talented racer V. Vedenin, who managed to win two gold and bronze medals, became the hero of the skiers' competition. However, not so much gold medal in the 30 km race, she glorified this athlete, as much as her performance at the last stage of the 4x10 km relay. When Vedenin took the start, the USSR team was losing to the Norwegian team for about a minute. Bridging such a competition gap with strong teamseemed impossible. The coaches set before Vedenin the only task - not to miss at least a silver medal. However, Vedenin was the first at the finish line, who managed not only to win a minute against the Norwegians, but to bring victory to his team with an advantage of more than 9 seconds.

IN ski racing on 5 and 10 km among women, G. Kulakova won a landslide victory, who managed to add a third to these two gold medals - victory in the relay.

The winner in the speed skating competition was A. Schenk (Netherlands), who won three gold medals - at distances of 1500, 5000 and 10,000 m.

One of the sensations of the Games was the performance of Japanese jumpers from a 70-meter springboard: Yu Kasai, A. Kono and S. Aochi managed to win all three medals.

Another sensation is the achievements of the athletes of the GDR, who played as an independent team for the second time. On X winter Olympic Games they managed to win 5 medals and finished tenth with 35 points. But there were already 14 medals in Sapporo (4, 3, 7, respectively). Three gold medals were won by the lugers, U. Weling became the first among the biathletes. In the team wrestling, the athletes of the GDR took second place (83 points). And the team victory was confidently achieved by the athletes of the USSR - 120 points and 16 medals. The third were athletes from Norway - 79 points and 12 medals (2, 5, 5).
